Yea, I know, unless you subscribe to the theory that Trump is an emissary of Satan and elected Republicans and a lot of self-described Christian leaders are lesser demons, they probably don’t actually want to kill regular churchgoers.
Although the “Satan and his minions” theory makes sense from a Biblical perspective, I don’t believe it and you shouldn’t either. No, I think they are all too human, just in a bad way. And they are not the sharpest knives in the drawer, so to speak, nor the least bit honest or moral.
In today’s news, the Kansas State Legislature voted to override a statewide order to ban large gatherings so that big numbers of people can attend church, particularly on Easter, which echoes Trump’s earlier call to fill the church’s on Christianity’s most holy day. And Kansas Republicans are not alone in loudly wanting to fill churches.
So it sure seems they are hell bent on causing an Easter Day massacre that will sickens and kills hundreds of thousands of churchgoers, but again, that is probably not their real goal. Something they can live with, sure, but not the real goal.
Although there is no one single explanation for why Republicans want so badly to expose as many churchgoers as possible to the Coronavirus, there are several explanations that make a weird kind of sense, at least within their sociopathic bubbles.
Think back to early in the crisis when a meme was out asking people if they knew anyone who had Coronavirus, saying that the answer being “no,” that they did not know anybody, that meant that the so-called pandemic was just a big hoax. or certainly not much of a threat. Or when they were saying there were only x small number of cases (15 being the most famous number), so it was not a danger at all.
The common thread there is that they are unable to grasp the possibility that things change with the passage of time. Fifteen becomes thirty, then in three days doubles to 60, then in three days doubles to 120, and pretty soon millions are infected. That’s not something Trump and a lot of other top Republicans seem capable of understanding. For them it is 15 cases today, so how could it be any more than that tomorrow?
Of course some poor fools think God will save them from the virus, not realizing that God tends to protect those who protect themselves. History is littered with the corpses of people who thought God would stop a bullet, or a sword thrust, or a volcano, or whatever. No, when the lava is coming towards you, God wants you to run. Same thing with the Coronavirus.
But as fact-based realists, we also have to consider that they do what they do for money, not just out of stupidity, or false religious beliefs. Trump wants his hotels and resorts to re-open, and when has he ever showed any care for others? Greedy preachers need the collection plates to keep getting passed around. How are they going to make payments on that condo in Panama Beach if no one comes to church? Weak elected Republicans fear the wrath of Fox News and other propaganda organizations, which might get them kicked off whatever gravy train they are riding.
It’s like Upton Sinclair said, “It’s difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”
Well, normal people’s salaries do depend on our elected leaders understanding it, and for whatever reason, they haven’t, and don’t, understand it. They have failed us. Failed us miserably.
But an election is coming. Vote. Whatever hurdles you have to face: just vote. Vote them out. It’s our only hope.
