Q: Nancy asks – In the survey you completed for Ballotpedia you said “ I will fight to restore our core American principles as laid out in the Constitution, New Testament, and Declaration of Independence. I will fight for you.“ Why did you include the New Testament? Why do you think this is appropriate? What about the Koran or any other religion’s holy book. None of these have any place in governing.
A: The core principle of the New Testament, particularly the Gospels, in my somewhat learned opinion, is that people should be generous and kind. The most prominent examples depicted in the life of Jesus include healing the sick, feeding the hungry, helping the poor, judging not, and treating others as you would like to be treated. They consistently preach against putting wealth accumulation above people’s need for health and well being.
I, as did most of the nation’s founders, believe those principles are excellent foundations for governing, regardless of which texts they may appear, or whether or not one has any particular religious beliefs.
Also like the founders, I have a strong belief in the need for the separation of church and state. Is there a single example in human history where theocratic government worked? If so, it wasn’t for very long. No, from the Spanish Inquisition to the Ayatollah, theocratic government inevitably turns violent and corrupt.
And like the Spanish Inquisition or the Iranian Ayatollahs, the Trump supporting evangelical movement in the United States is giving organized religion a bad name. They preach just about the polar opposite of what Jesus taught in the Gospels, and the corresponding principles on which this country was founded. We need to find ways to reach out and connect with the poor souls who have been bamboozled by these corrupt and phony “leaders” calling themselves Christians. The Gospels depict how Jesus rebelled against the organized religion of his time and place. It’s time for those who consider themselves Christians, and American patriots, to rebel against their openly corrupt leaders of our time and get back to respecting the words and acts upon which their religion, and their country were founded.
